Marie Anderson is a queer experimental animator, new media artist, and fantasy illustrator working out of Richmond and Hampton Roads, VA. They hybridize obsolete media with experiential, emerging technologies to explore non-didactic antifables, gender play, and the slippage of time.
In pursuit of pulp delight and nonlinear odyssey, their animations and immersive installations recall the invitation of embodiment and play of 2D character montage and themed entertainment. They often explore the expectant, in-between spaces of DVD menus, opening credits, and dark theaters with the joyful, disruptive blending of digital and physical textures, both appropriated and fabricated.
Marie graduated from VCUarts in 2023 as a first generation college student with a BFA in Kinetic Imaging, a minor in Art History, numerous accolades, and working experience in indie animated film production and sound design. Since graduating, they have continued to cultivate their specialized practice of projection-mapping, multimedia animation, and new media installation using Touchdesigner and VDMX. In 2023, they brought collaborative live visuals to the ICA’s Resonate Podcast Festival, and in 2024, they were awarded a fellowship to expand their interactive Body Map, which they are continuing to prototype and exhibit as an installation series well into 2025. They are currently working as a senior horticulturist specializing in flowering and ornamental shrubs, and occasionally as a media technology educator.
